Very well written and informative book. Had to read it for neuroscience and it was a break from the regular material we dealt with (g-protein coupled receptor anyone?)Sometimes it was difficult to read, in an emotionally moving way.If you don't know anything about the history of mental illness in America THIS is the book to read.Yes, it becomes a bit opinionated and antidrug industry, but if you don't come to that conclusion on your own then your just a pharma shrill or a delusional physiatrist.

The facts in this book are true. Antipsychotics may come with side effects that may be as bad as chemotherapy for cancer. It is important for people, especially physicians, to not underestimate the suffering these medications can cause. But these medications can also radically change your life for the better.Personally, the medication side effects I experienced on my first atypical (newer) antipsychotic were severe and consistent with the author’s desciption. There was no day that went by when I wasn’t acutely suffering. However, my first medication did keep me out of the hospital, and allowed me to live in community rather than being perpetually restrained in an institution. Even with the horrific side effects, my first medication gave me a better life. This book is so concerned with medication side effects that the author forgets to acknowledge these medications can improve a patient’s qualify of life. He also does not make a comprehensive distinction between the older antipsychotics which are neurotoxic and difficult to tolerate versus newer medications that have fewer side effects. The author does not acknowledge that patients find medications that work well for them all the time. Eleven years ago, I found the medication that works for me, and I have lived a wonderful life with few side effects all these years, in full remission from schizophrenia.Yes, I have experienced what this author describes. Antipsychotics may come with a high price to pay, but even then, they may drastically improve a patient’s quality of life. These medications may allow individuals who are a danger to themselves or others and used to always be institutionalized to recover, leave the hospital and live in the community.

Read this book before stepping foot in a psychiatrist's office, or taking any medication for any kind of emotional distress. Psychiatry is nonsense, and the sooner it falls into the dustbin of history, the better.

There is a lot of interesting information here, but it's repetitive, somewhat poorly organized, and perhaps even a bit skewed in certain areas. Though I am in agreement with the great majority of what the author says, I have the distinct feeling that something was left out somewhere along the way. Still, there are many jaw dropping facts worth knowing. They are, sadly, a part of American history - more recent history than most of us may realize. This book is solely about Schizophrenia, which of course covers a wide range of problematic behavior, but do not expect any info on other, less severe forms of mental illness. Definitely worth the read if you're interested in this sort of thing. Academic in tone.

A cautionary, compelling, frightening story of the mistreatment of the mentally ill by many of those entrusted with their care.

Having dealt with the mental health system for years while caring for a schizophrenic son, words can't express my gratitude to this author. FINALLY, someone is telling the truth about the American mental healthcare system and psychiatry, which is fraught with outright deceit and callous indifference to the suffering of the mentally ill. I can attest to the ugly truth about antipsychotic medications, having witnessed it firsthand. I regret that I didn't read this book years ago, before I knew something was horribly wrong with the information perpetuated by the people I've relied on to "help" my son.

This is a really great book about the history of mental heath in America, the developments in psychology, and failures of the system. This is a great look at the policy decisions (and lack of) surrounding mental health.

Europe's Last Chance: Why the European States Must Form a More Perfect UnionBy Guy Verhofstadt

In the heart of Europe’s current crisis, one of the continent’s foremost statesmen urges for a radical remaking of the European Union in the model of the United States

The diseases that plague Europe respect no borders. Guy Verhofstadt, former prime minister of Belgium and a leader in the European Parliament, shows that wherever we look—from the debt crisis in Greece to the rise of political Islam across Europe, the Syrian refugee crisis to Putin’s aggressive imperialism—we see colossal challenges far too large for any single nation to overcome.

In Europe's Last Chance, Verhofstadt proposes that Europe abandon the artificial divisions of nation-states and instead embrace a unified democracy on a continental scale: a United States of Europe. Revealing how this seemingly impossible dream nearly became a reality in 1953—when only a last-minute vote by the French parliament stopped a political and military unification of France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands—Verhofstadt builds a powerful and surprising argument for the necessity of unity; so that Europe remains secure, influential, and prosperous into the future.

One of the best - perhaps the best - explanation of the financial collapse of 2008.Most "explanations" of the cause of the crash are really a description of "What" happened: packages of mortgages (which contained some bad stuff) being traded between banks and others, which led to a financial collapse, which led to an economic downturn. In his book Peter Wallison takes us back to what created the circumstances for the mortgage meltdown: The government policies - under both Clinton and Bush II - that forced the lowering of underwriting standards, in the intent of increasing homeownership. This resulted in a higher and higher percentage of subprime mortgages (the bad stuff). Without so much of the "bad stuff" in the mix, there could not have been the "mortgage meltdown". This book demonstrates that the subprime mortgages, almost by definition, were bound to fail. Wallison gives us one very telling statistic, for 30 years - right up to 1992, when the government push to issue subprime began - the US percent of home ownership was constant at 64%. By June 2008, it was slightly above 69%. Now, after the past six years of recession and foreclosures, it is back at the historic 64%. The subprimes made all the difference.Bankers and Economists are not the only readers who will benefit from this book. The casual reader will find very helpful thedefinitions and explanations of the terms that are batted around so freely by politicians and the "talking heads" on TV; Sub-Prime and Prime for starters. This truly is a book for all investors, homeowners, and taxpayers.

The lion’s work of my multi-year project reviewing all of the post-financial crisis books which I felt warranted review is long past, and my focus now is on my own work on the subject, targeting a 2017 release. The high volume of post-2008 books came between 2009 and 2011, and a few relevant stragglers entered the fray since then. Certainly the most noteworthy of the “latecomer” books on the crisis are the 2015 work of Peter Wallison, Hidden in Plain Sight: What Really Caused the World’s Worst Financial Crisis and Why it Could Happen Again. I refer to the work as noteworthy because it is a fine book with a highly valid contribution to the study of the crisis’ causation, but also because Wallison was an actual member of the government’s Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, a preposterous waste of taxpayer money assembled by Congress in July 2009 to thoroughly investigate the crisis and its causes. It was not just a waste of money because the commission’s findings got everything wrong (Wallison admirably was the sole dissenter from the commission’s pre-baked conclusions), but also because the whole pre-text for the inquiry was to guide changes in policy that could stem the tide in the future. The Obama administration’s remedy to the financial crisis – the Dodd-Frank legislation – was rammed through Congress into law before this commission had even completed its work or submitted its findings. It was a show pony of an investigation, but it did nevertheless contain one Peter Wallison, and now several years later he has come out to give us his thesis on what really caused the crisis, and why he could not go along with the Congressional farce. His thesis is, in a nutshell, that it was government housing policy that caused the financial crisis. No shocker there. He essentially uses data point after data point after data point to incontestably prove that (a) 31 million “non-traditional” mortgages came into the American economy by 2008 (NTM being the more important classification than the media’s love of the term “subprime”, as it combines where the real toxicity proved to be – in the combination of subprime with “Alt-A” – ‘alternatives to agencies’, or loans that didn’t mean the underwriting standards of Fannie/Freddie; these 31 million NTM’s were at the heart of the crisis; and (b) They were the direct result of government housing policy which created them into being; and (c) The mere existence of this massive bloc of troubled mortgages was bad enough, but the extensive effort to cover up their existence – to hide or suppress the real number of NTM’s in the system, – led to a very faulty climate for risk-taking; and (d) Efforts to continue legislating social mandates via government housing policy will continue to lead to economic instability and even repeated crises. That may have been a mouthful. It was certainly a mouthful to read his 361 pages of substantiation. But the basics of his conclusions are simple enough, and if left alone, not really problematic. There would have been no financial crisis without aggressive government mandates to increase lending where it did not belong, and that misguided belief that social policy could be administered through the economic experimentation of various lending mandates created an intensely malignant culture in the world of mortgage lending. Wallison further proves beyond any shadow of any doubt that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac did not merely get “caught up in the pursuit of ill-gotten gains,” as is often alleged, mostly as an attempt to even blame free market greed for Fannie/Freddie’s decidedly non-free market troubles. Rather, Wallison proves, Fannie and Freddie got heavy into the NTM world because they had no choice if they were o meet their government mandates. I have read a dozen critiques of Wallison’s work, and none of them dispute his raw data in this regard. So with a useful book on misguided government social/housing policy as a core piece of the financial crisis, why do I need to find fault at all? The problem I have with this mostly fine work is that Wallison is not content to trust his own contentions about the crisis; he decides to conclude something more than the truth of his own thesis requires him to conclude. For Wallison, it is not just that government housing policy was a key piece, or the key piece, or a sine qua non in this crisis. For whatever reason, Wallison felt the need to additionally conclude that all other contributors to what became the 2008 crisis were not contributors at all – not in a complementary way, not in a supplementary way, not in a toxic accelerant way – they simply should be dismissed out of hand. This conclusion is frustrating to a thoughtful reader, for it is highly unnecessary for one also convinced of Wallison’s underlying work, and because it is simply preposterous on its face. The lengths Wallison goes to in order to claim that Federal Reserve monetary policy played no role in fertilizing the 2002-2006 housing bubble is cartoonishly silly. Perhaps no segment of the book is more disappointing than his completely indefensible supposition that there was no material inter-connectedness in the financial system, and that the CDS problem (credit default swaps) were easily remedied by one financial institution just replacing the CDS from one defunct firm (say, Bear Stearns) with a CDS from another healthy firm (he goes so far as to say a homeowner just needs to replace a bankrupt fire insurance company with another, never stopping to consider that in 2008 the entire business of this “fire insurance” was dead on arrival, since all of the companies were in over their heads with them, no one trusted each other’s marks, and surely no one wanted to write what had just brought down another firm (Bear, Lehman, etc.). My frustration with Wallison’s reckless conclusions that essentially all was well in Bear and Lehman land is not just how completely and empirically wrong they are, but how unnecessary they were for this book. He decided to throw out the “perfect storm” hypothesis about the crisis – the one that says it was the cocktail of government housing policy, Fed monetary policy, Wall Street leverage, rating agency corruption, and all other such assembled theories – and rather than conclude that nearly every problem which has been diagnosed in the financial crisis autopsy has some validity to it, even if some more culpability than others, he decides to discard all the others in their entirety. And in doing so, I fear, he loses incredible legitimacy for his very legitimate basic thesis. The financial crisis would have never happened without the accelerated attempt of Washington D.C. to legislate social policy through housing policy. One of the results of this fatal government initiative was a non-traditional mortgage glut that surpassed 31 million in number. The accompanying and unsurprising problems that these non-traditional mortgages created were the source of the financial crisis, and to the extent that Wallison’s book carefully and academically defends everything the prior three sentences say, his book was a helpful and needed work for students of the crisis (and a society that says they don’t want it to happen again). But the story as told in the preceding three sentences is not the whole story, as those 31 million NTM’s were the critical mass of an inter-connected financial system that levered up on insanity. They levered up on human greed, and I don’t mean the Wall Street banker kind of greed that wanted a bigger bonus. The financial system levered up on the greed of Main Street, that a covetous purchase of a home you could not afford was a good and noble thing, and it was our financial system’s bet on Main Street that proved fatal. Lehman’s collapse did not cause the financial crisis; it was caused by the financial crisis. After reading Wallison’s book readers will understand that crisis even more, but they will not understand it completely.

This book is must reading for anyone who continues to believe more and bigger government is the solution to all our problems. Until our leaders/politicians are willing to own up to and be honest about their own mistakes rather than trying to hide them through spin, Washington does not deserve our trust and confidence. This book is methodically researched and written to show the root causes of the 2008 mortgage crisis. It makes clear Washington's own culpability in causing the crisis and that subsequent investigations covered that up. It also makes the valid point that until Washington is honest with itself about the causes of a problem, it will be incapable of legislating solutions to prevent them from reoccurring in the future. Dodd Frank was passed to carry out an political agenda and did not put in place laws that would have prevented the mortgage crisis from occurring in the first place.

Absolutely flabbergasting. This book is non-stop facts and stats essentially debunking the current 2008 Crisis narrative. Wallison, who was on the FCIC investigation into the crisis, has expanded his dissenting position and supplemented it with internal memos, quotes from speeches and promotions showing just how the housing bubble was created and why.Fannie Mae and the politicians and activists behind the housing bubble are convicted by their own mouths. They say explicitly what they intend to do, then congratulate themselves on having done it, in speeches, in memos, in documented self-promotion. They were pleased as punch that they undermined sound underwriting standards and forcibly spiked the housing demand. When everything came crashing down they blamed the usual suspects, wall street greed and lack of regulation. The hypocrisy is stunning. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the 2008 crisis and the 2007 housing bubble.

Peeling the OnionBy Gunter Grass

In this extraordinary memoir, Nobel Prize–winning author Günter Grass remembers his early life, from his boyhood in a cramped two-room apartment in Danzig through the late 1950s, when The Tin Drum was published.

During the Second World War, Grass volunteered for the submarine corps at the age of fifteen but was rejected; two years later, in 1944, he was instead drafted into the Waffen-SS. Taken prisoner by American forces as he was recovering from shrapnel wounds, he spent the final weeks of the war in an American POW camp. After the war, Grass resolved to become an artist and moved with his first wife to Paris, where he began to write the novel that would make him famous.

Full of the bravado of youth, the rubble of postwar Germany, the thrill of wild love affairs, and the exhilaration of Paris in the early fifties, Peeling the Onion—which caused great controversy when it was published in Germany—reveals Grass at his most intimate.

Amazon says I have the Kindle edition but I have the paperback.I'm only up to chapter 6 at the moment but so far Steven Hugg has been very informative and, best of all, interesting. So often programming books can just be a drag to read, not this one. I found an error and searched for an errata online but haven't found one. On pg. 40 some changes to the video kernel are made but the snippet is incomplete, to save space I assume. On the third line of this snippet (ldy counter) 'counter' is not defined and people picking this up without some prior knowledge may get frustrated. There are a few other parts of the kernel that have to be changed in order to produce the image on the adjacent page (pg. 41). First CTRLPF should be set to #1 to mirror the playfield. Second, if you don't zero the PF0, PF1, and PF2 registers of the TIA in the overscan or vblank you will end up with what was left over in them when the screen starts to redraw again after vsync. $BF is last stored in them. This leaves the top not being a flat line (as it is on pg. 41). The top line will look like this ##_##_############_##_##############_##_##. You could also 'sta WSYNC' after storing A into PF0, PF1, PF2 in 'lvscan' to solve this without wasting extra space. These types of mistakes can make learning to program from a book difficult. I have a background in programming and in 65xx assembly, in particular using dasm (not for the VCS though), so I didn't have too much of an issue, but not all readers will have my background. So far I'm enjoying the book and by no means is this a bad book. Very good actually. All programming books have mistakes. The VCS was a unique machine. Sometimes it will make you cry for a frame buffer, but it's so satisfying to unlock this little machine and make it bend to your will.I'll update this review as I move through the book.EDIT: I'll correct my above statement. It seems the book wants you to rely on examples on the companion website to further explain the code snippets. So what I perceived as an error was simply me not realizing that the info was in a different location.

This is a great companion book to very cool online Atari 2600 IDE and DASM compiler that allows you to see your code changes in real time in a java based Atari 2600 emulator. This book attempts to introduce you to 6502 Assembly Language from scratch. I would recommend looking online for a PDF of a book called '6502 Assembly Language Programming' by Judi N. Fernandez, Donna N. Tabler, and Ruth Ashley as a great companion to this book. Between the two, you should be able to master this ancient dark art of assembly programming! Another online document that will give you even better insight to the Atari 2600 architecture to use the built in chips completing your ability to write games for this system is called the 'Stella Programmers Guide' by Steve Wright.

I'll preface my review by stating that I've always been a die-hard lover of the 65XX and have always enjoyed writing software for the various hardware that it's been employed by over the years. I purchased this book strictly to review from a programmer's perspective. I wanted to give it a thorough reading before recommending it to aspiring programmers and game design hobbyists who strive to work in an environment that requires the programmer to get as close to the bare metal as possible.Through the early chapters, the author gently leads you into 6502 programming fundamentals. This books does an excellent job in not only teaching the reader how to write code, but to take command of a feature-rich assembler with marcro's and labels. After the introduction, you're immediately lead into the hardware of the Atari VCS. THIS is where the book REALLY shines. The author does an excellent job illustrating programming principles in a simple, readable way that can be reasonably understood by someone with little to no programming experience. This is where MANY technical writings (especially in machine code / assembly language programming) fail miserably. As you learn about the 6502's load/store instructions, bit-wise logic, conditional loops and the various addressing modes you will quickly understand these concepts as you: Draw a sprite on the screen, change the background color, manipulate the playfield registers and how to use the processor to keep track of CPU cycles/color clocks for time sensitive operations. Rather then spending 2 hours explaining to someone how indirect Y addressing works with the 6502, I can show someone a few paragraphs in a chapter in this book and they will IMMEDIATELY understand how it works and why. Trust me, I've already done it!Each chapter becomes a building block, step by step. I doubt many people will feel overwhelmed by the book providing that you take it slow, one chapter at a time. The trick is to get "good" at the exercise in one chapter before moving to the next. While this book isn't a complete bible for the Atari VCS, it's an excellent complimentary piece to the Stella Programmer's Handbook. I do feel that some of the more important aspects of VCS programming were a bit rushed and not as thoroughly fleshed out as they should have been for clarity. But it still reads well.To anyone who is interested in learning how to program the Atari VCS or any 6502 based console/computer, I highly recommend this book as it translates the technical jargon of the 6502/VCS into an easily understood and smooth read. This is something that you won't hardly find in the 6502 "Bibles" by Rodney Zaks and Lance Laventhal.

Sean Carroll is a successful theoretical physicist, skilled ponderer of philosophical questions and gifted communicator of science. He brings all these qualities to bear in his big-hearted, ambitious latest book “The Big Picture.” The book is part sweeping survey of some of the most thought-provoking ideas in modern science, part sweeping rumination on two of the most fundamental questions that we can ask: How do we gain knowledge of the world? And how do we distill meaning from an impersonal, purely physical universe? The book can roughly be divided into two parts. The first part can be titled “How do we know” and the second can be titled “What do we know”. The siren song weaving its way through Carroll’s narrative is called poetic naturalism. Poetic naturalism simply means that there are many ways to talk about reality, and all of them are valid as long as they are rooted in naturalism and consistent with one another. This is the central message of the book: we make up explanations about the world and we call these explanations “stories” or “models” or “ideas”, and all of them are valid in their own ways. The first part of the book explores some of the central concepts in the philosophy of science that make up poetic naturalism. Carroll starts from Aristotle and the ancient Greeks and progresses through the Arabs. He explores the investigations of Galileo in the seventeenth century. It was Galileo and his intellectual successor Isaac Newton who showed that the world operates according to self-sufficient physical laws that don’t necessarily require external causes. One of the most important concepts explored in the book is Bayesian thinking, in which one assigns probabilities to phenomena based on one’s previous understanding of the world and then updates this understanding (or “priors”) according to new evidence. Bayesian thinking is a powerful tool for distinguishing valid science from invalid science, and for distinguishing science from nonsense: one could in fact argue that all human belief systems operate (or should operate) according to Bayesian criteria. Bayesianism does introduce an element of subjectivity in the scientific process, but as Carroll demonstrates, this supposed bias has not harmed our investigations of natural phenomena and has allowed us to come up with accurate explanations.Another thread weaving its way through the book is that of emergence and domains of applicability. Emergence means the existence of properties that are not strictly reducible to their constituent parts. Although Carroll is a physicist and holds fundamental physics in high regard, he appreciates that chemistry has its own language and neuroscience has its own language, and these languages are as fundamental to their disciplines as photons and electrons are to physics. No field of inquiry is thus truly fundamental in an all-encompassing sense, since there are always emergent phenomena that offer stories and explanations in their own right. Emergence also manifests itself in the form of what are called effective theories in physics; these are theories in which the macroscopic behavior of a system does not depend in a unique way on a detailed microscopic description: for instance a container of air can be perfectly described by properties like its average temperature and pressure without resorting to descriptions of quarks and Higgs bosons. As long as the two domains are consistent with each other (what Carroll calls “planets of belief”) we are on firm ground. These ideas lay the foundation for the second half of the book which takes us on a sweeping sojourn through many of the key ideas of modern science. Carroll says that the most important description of the world comes from what’s called the ‘Core Theory’. This theory ties together the fundamental forces of nature and particles like the Higgs boson; it is grounded in general relativity and quantum mechanics. It can explain the entire physical universe, from atoms to the Big Bang, certainly in principle but often in practice. If there's any one hard scientific lesson to take away from the book, it's that the universe is made up of quantum fields. Later chapters deal with topics like evolution in real time, photosynthesis and metabolism, leading theories for the origins of life, thermodynamics and networks in the brain. When Carroll talks about entropy, complexity and the arrow of time he’s in his element; one important aspect of complexity which I had not quite appreciated is that complexity can actually result from an increase, not decrease, of entropy and disorder if guided the right way.The book also dwells in detail upon Rene Descartes since his ideas of dualism and pure thought seem to pose challenge to poetic naturalism, but as Carroll demonstrates, these challenges are illusory since both the mind and the body can be shown to operate based on well known physical principles. These ideas keep appearing in the later parts of the book in which Carroll deals with many thought experiments in philosophy and neuroscience that purport to ask questions about reality and consciousness. Some experiments involve zombies, others involve aliens simulating us; all are entertaining. A big question is subjective experience (or “qualia”) which is sometimes regarded as some kind of impenetrable domain that’s divorced from objective laws of nature. For the most part Carroll convincingly shows us that the same laws of nature that give rise to the motion of the planets also give rise to one’s perception of the color red, for instance. This section of the book involving famous conundrums like John Searle’s Chinese Room and ‘Mary the Color Scientist’ is fascinating and highly thought-provoking, and while the thought experiments have no clear resolution, Carroll’s point is that none of them violate the basic naturalistic structure of the universe and demand mysterious explanations. His discussion of consciousness is also very stimulating; he thinks that consciousness is not really a thing per se but an emergent property of organized matter. More succinctly, it’s a useful invention, a description of a particular way in which matter behaves rather than something that is beyond our current understanding of natural law; it is what we say rather than what is. Much of Carroll’s discussion here reminds me, as cheesy as it sounds, of a line from ‘The Matrix’: words like love, care and purpose are mere descriptions borne of language - what matters are the connections they imply. The book ends by taking us on a tour of some of the most important philosophical questions that human beings have asked themselves; questions of meaning, purpose, emotion and free will. Personally I found this section a bit rambling but I cannot really blame Carroll for this: none of these questions have a definitive answer and all are subject to speculation. On the other hand, this little tour provides non-specialists with an introduction to well-known philosophers and philosophies, including constructivism, deontology and utilitarianism. The big question here is how meaning can arise from the impersonal natural laws that have been described so far. Neither Carroll nor anyone else knows the answer, and the book simply makes the case that all these qualities are emergent properties that are all consistent with poetic naturalism. You may or may not be satisfied by this answer, but it certainly provides food for thought. In a book as ambitious as this one there’s bound to be some disagreement, and that’s a good thing. Here are some questions I had: Generally speaking Carroll is on more firm ground when talking about science rather than philosophy. Quite oddly at one point, he uses poetic naturalism to argue against opposition to gay marriage and LGBT rights. While his support for these issues is one I heartily share, I am not sure poetic naturalism is the best or the most persuasive reason to uphold these causes: we should support them not because of but in spite of naturalistic reasons. Also, Carroll who is a self-professed naturalist spends several paragraphs describing how all of the arguments for a supernatural God violate naturalism. However I think religion has a purpose beyond describing the real world, and ironically this purpose lends itself to the same analysis that Carroll does of human qualities like care and love. I would think that based on much of the book’s narrative, religion would be described as an emergent phenomenon that provides people with a set of stories and descriptions; these stories provide succor and and a sense of community. Are these stories real? They may not be, and they are certainly not grounded in natural law, but Carroll himself says at one point that models of the world should be used because they are useful, not because they claim to be real. Shouldn’t one say the same thing about the positive and personal aspects of religion? However, none of these concerns should detract from the sweeping scientific and philosophical journey the book takes us on. Carroll is an engaging, sympathetic and pleasant guide to the big picture, irrespective of whether you agree with him completely or not. Ranging over some of the most pressing questions that humanity has unearthed and continues to unearth, the one clear message in the book is an unambiguous one: we will always keep on searching, and this search will continue to propel humanity past unexpected and exciting horizons. More than anything else the discussion drives home the grandeur of the universe and the human mind, and this is grandeur we should all revel in. Perhaps this bit of wisdom from Carroll’s chapter on entropy where he is describing complexity in a cup of coffee sums it up best: “Those swirls in the cream mixing in the coffee? That’s us. Ephemeral patterns of complexity, riding a wave of increasing entropy from simple beginnings to a simple end. We should enjoy the ride.”

The Big Picture by Sean Carroll is an excellent book for anyone who wants a concise, understandable, and we'll written overview of modern science, with an emphasis on quantum mechanics and the philosophy of Poetic Naturalism. In this review I will focus on the philosophical side of his work and particularly his treatment of issues related to consciousness. As Carroll puts it, "Naturalism” claims that there is just one world, the natural world... (while) “Poetic” reminds us that there is more than one way of talking about the world . He describes these different ways of talking about the world as an "interconnected series of models appropriate at different levels". From this perspective, physics, chemistry, biology, and even psychology and sociology are simply different but useful ways of talking about the same world. From a scientific perspective, the most fundamental way of talking about the world is quantum field theory and, more specifically, the Core Theory, a term coined by Nobel Laueate Frank Wilczek. The Core Theory may be viewed as quantum field theory within a "domain of applicability" that includes most of the universe in which we live but excludes certain phenomena (e.g. dark matter, the big bang and black holes). Though the Core Theory is not the elusive Theory of Everything, it has been validated by so much data from so many experiments that it may be as close as we ever get to scientific certainty. As Carroll puts it, "We can be confident that the Core Theory, accounting for the substances and processes we experience in our everyday life, is correct. A thousand years from now we will have learned a lot more about the fundamental nature of physics, but we will still use the Core Theory to talk about this particular layer of reality". That is an audacious claim, but Carroll supports that claim with rigorous scientific reasoning.Carroll views higher level or "coarse grained theories" such as chemistry and biology as "emergent" and describes them as "... speaking different languages, but offering compatible descriptions of the same underlying phenomena in their respective domains of applicability". For example, chemistry and biology are emergent models of the universe, compatible with each other and the Core Theory, but with unique utilities in their particular domain of applicability. He briefly mentions supervenience, the view that emergent theories exist in an ontological hierarchy where higher level theories rest on more fundamental theories. For example, there could be no change at the level of biology without there being a change in the underlying chemistry. Similarly, there could be no change at the level of chemistry absent a change in the more fundamental physics. All of the models are interconnected and interdependent. Though each model has its own unique utility and coherence, that utility and coherence ultimately rests on a consistency with other more fundamental models.Unfortunately, Carroll's treatment of how different emergent models relate to each other alternates between autonomous or semiautonomous utility on the one hand and consistency with more fundamental models on the other. Though he warns readers not to begin a sentence in one model and end it in another, by moving between these two criteria for the validity of those models, he committs a very similar error. He frequently refers to consistency or compatibility among different models as essential, but also writes, "Within their respective domains of applicability, each theory is autonomous—complete and self-contained, neither relying on the other". This is just one example of where he suggests that the soundness of a model can be evaluated by its utility and internal coherence, and without reference to consistency with more fundamental models. In my opinion, when this level of credence is given to utility, one has entered a slippery slope that can lead to invalid ontological conclusions. Now, the criteria of utility does have its own domain of applicability, namely when the theory does not make ontological claims. For example, there are languages or ways of talking about everything from hair styling to stamp collecting that do not make claims about fundamental reality. Even Newtonian physics has its utility within its particular domain of applicability. In these areas, utility is a perfectly reasonable criteria. But when it comes to any model that claims to reflect, at some level, an underlying reality, utility by itself is an inadequate criteria.Another example is theism, a world view that Carroll does an excellent job demonstrating why it is not only unnecessary but a way of looking at the world but one that is ultimately inconsistent with the Core Theory. But if one evaluates the validity of theism, and particularly the theism embodied in major world religions such as Jewdaism, Christianity, and Islam, from the perspective of their utility, one is headed for an ontological train wreck. Who can deny the comfort (i.e. utility) that faith in a loving god and a blissful after life has given millions if not billions of people? But does that mean that such a world view is real in the same sense that the Core Theory is real? Of course not.The same logic applies to the role of consciousness in human behavior. Though there may be personal or social utility in the belief that conscious intent is responsible for human behavior, such a position is inconsistent with everything we know from cognitive science and everything we know about how the world works according to the Core Theory. Behavior emerges from complex brain activity, not inner experiences. The fact that our brain is responsible for both behavior and consciousness, at approximately the same time, gives rise to the illusion that conscious intent causes behavior. It is no more reasonable to claim that consciousness is responsible for behavior than to claim that a god is responsible for behavior or that a roosters crowing causes the sun to rise.Carroll tries to get around this by claiming that consciousness is just another way of talking about brain activity and the deeper layers of chemistry and physics. Unfortunately, reducing consciousness to a way of talking about experience fails to solve the Hard Problem. Consciousness is more than just a way of talking about brain states. It is dependent for its existence and form on those states, but is not identical to them. I do not claim to know what consciousness is, but whatever it is, it is more than words. Thus, poetic naturalism fails as a satisfactory philosophy of mind on two counts. First, it fails to give an adequate understanding of inner experience and secondly, it provides credence to the idea that consciousness is responsible for behavior. The first failure is understandable; the Hard Problem is hard for a reason and no one has yet come up with a satisfactory solution to it. As David Chalmers has said, that may take a hundred years. But Carroll should have seen the second failure coming. By allowing for the claim that consciousness can be responsible for behavior, he is opening the door for a new element in the Core Theory, an element he has argued persuasively does not exist. If it existed, this new element or property, somehow related to connsciousness, would make David Chalmers a very happy camper, but for the Sean Carroll who describes the Core Theory with such reverence, not so much.In conclusion, The Big Picture is an excellent book on the current status of science and his portrait of Poetic Natualism as a unifying philosophy. For those reasons, I highly recommend it to interested lay readers. However, I also urge those readers to be very careful in analyzing his treatment of consciousness. I believe he made a significant error in that analysis, though the error could very easily be my own.
